In Which Jonah Gets Punched in the Face

Posted by meekrat on December 5, 2008

Magnificent. You know, for all the meandering and mediocrity this strip puts out, sometimes it nearly totally redeems itself. Like today, in which we see Big-Time punching people and, really, totally blowing his cover. Well, Big-Time, your desire to punch Jonah in the face has probably ended your light reign of villiany. Here’s hoping the Kingpin is the next villian Spider-Man passively confronts.

That was a waste of the bodyguard, though.

What, did the bodyguard just keel over in a faint? This strip usually moves so slowly, but it can’t waste even a single panel on disposing of the bodyguard?

And whatthehell is Big-Time going to do next? Tie up the unconscious Jonah under the clock next to Maria and tell her, “I’ll be right back — just wait RIGHT there for a sec!”

“A sec” meaning the 15 minutes remaining until the clock falls down. I think I see what’s going to happen: Spidey shows up, a brawl ensues, and Biggy winds up directly under the clock as it strikes 1, giving him an ironic death and Spidey a punning opportunity.

Big-Time: his super-power is, apparently, a really short attention span.

If he puts Jonah under the Clock of Damocles too, won’t it strike two instead of one?

I’m glad he can just punch a couple guys in the middle of a crowded train station, with Spider-fake standing behind him and just kind of chillin’, and no one gives a damn. If it’s this easy, why doesn’t he just wander up to Maria and stab her with a clock-shaped knife or something?

I think their will be some minor league villainy by big time until the clock strikes. Once it strikes and falls Spider-man shows up and saves Maria. Then a brawl insues. I also believe there will be a pun. The cops chasing spider-man will also end due to someone explaining the situation and the cops just taking it as the truth and locking up big time.

There should be a soap strip where someone is punching someone else in every panel. I guess that’s kind of what “Dick Tracy” is, though.

Wait a sec — I actually overlooked him at first, but what the hell is Spider-Man doing in panel two, besides standing back and letting the bad guy beat up innocents? Last we saw him he was hanging around uselessly at the insurance company.

Oops — dlauthor is right, it’s Spider-Fake, although he’s suddenly put his mask on. Sorry.

I don’t get the perspective in panel 2… it looks as if the Bodyguard is unconscious and lying on the floor, yet still comes up to Big-Time’s crotch. What?

I like the different view of Jonah’s do.

  10. [...] So what about Thursday’s first panel? Well, Spider-Man is stopping the aforementioned giant clock from crashing into a wall. Said giant clock has J. Jonah Jameson, Maria’s current lover (And nemesis to Spider-Man) tied up on the back of it. For sheer insanity factor, this pretty much speaks for itself, but if you really want the whole story, go here and click on the entries from the bottom up, starting with “In Which Jonah Gets Punched in the Face“.
