Not a Brand New Day! FLASHBACK!
Posted by meekrat on January 4, 2009
Well, this isn’t entirely a recap strip. More so, the first real panel tells us straight-up that this is merely a series of flashback strips, and not a reboot or something. This way, when they revert everything in the comic to how it was two years ago, Stan can just be like, “Okay, flash back to the present.” In this way, Stan Lee has proven to be quite the competent little writer. Also, Peter’s showing a bit of quip in the fourth real panel.
Oh, and the next box is actually a bit mysterious. It may say “ELEKTRO-magnetism!” but the electric guy’s name is Electro. This may just be a typo, but I’m willing to wait to see if it’s actually Electro. Do you think he’ll actually pop up this week? I’m waiting apprehensively.
TIL: The fact that this flashback thing means NO MORE MARIA LOPEZ. HA HA!

Mike, you might be wrong about the flashback thing. I think the box in the “first real panel” is a feeble attempt to introduce casual readers to the new/old Spider-Man. I suspect that this is an actual reboot, and that we are stuck, for better or worse (nudge, nudge, wink, wink), in a time warp.
A reboot would also make sense in terms of the entire Spider-Man franchise, especially the movies (which, at this point, are the most successful, highest-visibility incarnation of the character): a unified presentation of a young, unmarried Spidey.
I also suspect that Stan Lee is trying to recapture the glory of Silver Age Spidey — the days when he was the most unique character in the comics, blazing new trails in the superhero genre. I don’t think it’ll work; we’re still stuck with the same “creative” team that so regularly drove the strip into the ground. In other words: Meet the new/old Spider-Man, same as the old/new Spider-Man.

Wow, Peter is ugly in that fourth/second panel.

well, as the last panel bubble says “it’s great to know that some things never change”. i can’t think of anything better to add.

So he just changes in the street now? I know you’re new to this, Pete, but come on.

“Calling all cars!”? Did we flash back to prohibition-era Chicago or something?

What is with Peter in panels 2 and 3? in two he has this scar thing that looks like it is supposed to be a shadow, and in three he just looks off.
I do like the 4th panel.

I’m going to disagree with you on the fourth panel on the grounds that Pete is way too psyched about the robbery.
I’m thinking that, if he has already assumed the great responsibility deal, then he would have more of a look of grim determination or something like that; as opposed to the look he is sporting that suggests something more like he just hit on a trifecta.
