Here’s your lackluster comic reviews.
These are only notable for how arrogant the Fantastic Four are. Then again, they have fought Galactus and lived to tell the tale, so they have every right to be. Also, this means that we’re sitting here watching Spider-Man fight nobodies like Big-Time and Kurt Kordok when Galactus is out there. Stupid comic.
Wouldn’t it have been better to use those tricks before your friend was fatally wounded, Mandrake? Just a thought.
Yep. That Phantom… always into fighting pirates, he is. Yep.
If you’re wearing mind-control headware, maybe you should protect it a bit better. Or, at least, explain why you can’t protect it better.
The cannon looks like it’s talking! O-ho, hilarity.

I apologize for not posting. I had a job this week, and that, coupled with school, work, and terrible depression made me not want to post. So here’s a catch-up post. There’s also the DCR posts (neglecting other people’s sites would not do) and a new Carafe for you to peruse. A new CYOB will be up next week, after long last.
I like how Spider-Man’s whole purpose of going to the Baxter Building (or Four Freedoms Plaza) is undermined in the last panel, in which the Thing simply tells him that they would protect the city anyway, even if Spider-Man didn’t say a blasted thing. It’ll probably be a blow to Spider-Man’s ego. Also, what’s up with the Human Torch in the second comic, and his coloring? How odd.
How would something bouncing make it harder to drop? You’d think that would make it easier. Not to mention the whole second panel of the second comic. I’m guessing he made them knock each other unconscious, or something, as his hypnotic gestures are just illusion.
I do like how their histories sort of sync up. If the Phantom’s wife wasn’t still alive, I’d be advocating his seduction of Savarna. Also, this is the second storyline she’s been in, and the second time she gets naked. Just pointing that out.

All caught up. Read on. Blah. This post has the most tags I’ve ever used.
My, but look at all the cameos. The design choice for the Fantastic Four is rather odd, as if they couldn’t decide as to whether they wanted them to look like the classic versions or the movie ones. In any case, it’s nice to see them interacting with Spider-Man. I’ve always liked the Fantastic Four, after all. If Saturday’s comic is any judge, this whole thing is just going to be Spider-Man telling random super-heroes that he’s going out of town. While this is sort of silly (I’m sure none of them would just sit around while Doctor Octopus created havoc) it does mean we may get to see the likes of Daredevil, Thor, Doctor Strange, and Iron Man. I know Doctor Strange has appeared in this strip before, but I’m not sure about the other ones. Hopefully they’ll be able to color Doctor Strange and Iron Man correctly.
Also, the whole “sneaking into the Fantastic Four” headquarters thing? That is what Spider-Man always does, for some reason. It’s just one of those things. OH. Also, the Electro thing happened in the past. Or in a dream. Or something. I don’t know.
I like the first comic strip with Klegg’s line about how dead men tell no tales, and neither do women. I know he probably means dead women, but I’d rather think that he means that women don’t tell stories because it’s misogynistic and silly and let me take minor delight in this strip where I can. I don’t think it’ll ever top that chubby Asian fellow tossing dynamite at a volcano.
All right, so the Phantom and Savarna are going after some pirates. Good for them. Hopefully they keep it professional since the Phantom’s wife is still alive, though he doesn’t know it.
How is it possible for Flash to break that glass with a mace, while Dale is unable to do so with a direct hit with a chair? I mean, I’m not all up on the science of projectiles, but I’m pretty sure even a guy like Flash wouldn’t be able to generate enough thrust to make sure the mace broke the glass. Superman might, or even Spider-Man. Like I said, though, I’m not completely sure. And there was that Apple commercial where the guy smashed the TVs, so I really have no idea what I’m talking about anymore.
Usually in this instance, the hero gets thrown in jail and has to contend with the fact that he sent most of the other prisoners there. Nice to see that the Phantom doesn’t have to deal with that, but it looks like he’s imprisoned with Chuck Norris (last panel, guy on the left). Will they be able to get out?

You’ll find no joy here today. Only pain and confusion. For joy, perhaps look at Carafe? The current installment has been known to cause mirth. Also, don’t forget I usually post Thursdays and Fridays at the Daily Comics Review. With that, your joyless comic commentary:
It’ll probably fare just as well as the time you went to California for a few months. At this point, that was about two or three years ago. My god.
This part of Klegg’s plan is actually quite clever, if not particularly doable. Why do men with guns continually try to assault people for whom guns pose no threat? It’s absurdly bizarre.
I’m really confused at this point. Savarna knows that Kit Walker is also known as the Ghost-Who-Walks, but doesn’t know the Phantom? I realize he’s supposed to be a jungle legend, but you’d think she’d at least hear of him. I don’t know. Gah.

Carafe! CARAFE! CARAFEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Also, one of my comics is up there today. Go look. GO LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK.
I don’t really have any problems with this strip. Yeah, Peter’s dialog in panel one is sort of silly, but panel two shows that he’s at least trying to be strategic and panel three is sort of funny, in an incredibly bland sort of way. The blanket looks like a bunch of webbing, though. It would be funny if they just used Spider-Man’s webbing as a blanket.
Hey, do you think Klegg wants to substitute Mandrake for Derek? I mean, they haven’t mentioned it, but I’m sure they’re thinking it! Yes sir, I bet by the end of this week, we’ll find out Klegg’s sinister master plan!
Yes, you did, and you look very evil in that panel. You look like the Joker. And the Phantom has tiny arms in panel two.
Man, she looks like the Joker. So much like the Joker. So much.

I’m not an expert on plays and whatnot, but would an off-Broadway production really spend all that money to transport their talent from New York to Miami? I’m sure for some of the more well-known shows they would, but I doubt Mary Jane is something all that big. Of course, I could be wrong, and there’s off-Broadway troupes travelling all across America as we speak. I’m more sure that they wouldn’t pay to have Peter come along, though, which could be why Mary Jane is so shocked in panel three.
This week: Klegg intends to turn in Mandrake!
Next week: Mandrake actually does something about it!
It’d be sort of funny if she still came to the conclusion that he was a pirate, especially considering how he paid her in gold and jewels before.

I’m fighting off sickness today, folks. Yet here I am, writing down commentary. Hopefully this makes up for skipping last Thursday.
I’m pretty sure most comic strip blogs commented on this one today, because of the wholly gratuitous un-shirting in panel two. What’s all this about Miami, though? What’s in Miami? Is Mary Jane going to shoot a movie or something down there? Will Spider-Man accompany her, having random adventures? What about Sabretooth? I’m sure we’ll get the answers soon enough.
This would be a good idea on Klegg’s part, if Mandrake wasn’t able to gesture hypnotically and get out of all this.
Telling someone you’re not there to harm them, but grabbing their gun and shoving them, is really the worst way to earn someone’s trust. I mean, yeah, the Phantom doesn’t want to get himself shot or anything, but there was probably a better way of making sure Savarna didn’t shoot him.

Carafe, everyone. It’ll rock your socks clean off.
Uh oh. The third panel doesn’t bode well, since Spider-Man should already know that Sabretooth is dangerous since he’s spent the better part of the past two weeks fighting him. Chances are, Sabretooth is going to leave Spider-Man alone soon and sneak off, leaving Spider-Man to probably go home and just ignore the fact that a feral madman is running around New York. Only later will Spider-Man realize he probably should have done something about the mutant when he had the chance.
Hilda has known the man for about a week, and during that week Derek has hit on her and done lots of things which would make any sane person think, “I need to get rid of this guy.” Yet Hilda wants to fight Klegg and his band of thugs to protect Derek. You’re something else, Hilda.
Man, I hope the Phantom doesn’t hit on Savarna. That would be really bad, down the line.

Hey folks. Commentary? Right here.
I remember when no one really knew a thing about Wolverine, other than that he was old and Canadian, and also a samurai. Ah, and that he had a connection to Sabretooth that Sabretooth refused to elaborate upon. Now we know that Wolverine was some rich kid, but I don’t think the Sabretooth connection has really been explained. So are they really going with Sabretooth being Wolverine’s brother here? Maybe! Do I care? Not really! As long as things keep moving and remain around this level of quality, I’m pleased.
Mandrake is going to gesture hypnotically at Klegg so hard soon. So hard.
As long as the pirate doesn’t decide to shoot the guy in the purple bodysuit on sight, this is a pretty decent plan.

Hey. Sorry about not posting on Friday. I’ve been trying to get better with that, but I took some cold medicine and found myself unable to stay awake for more than fifteen minutes at a time. Not an environment very conducive to posting comic strip commentary or making web-comics. Anyway, here’s what was missed. And for once, with the exception of Mandrake, every comic is pretty much a winner! Is 2010 the year I stop doing commentary because there’s nothing left to criticize? We’ll see!
I actually did some minor research for this post, and Spider-Man does know that Wolverine is tied in with the X-Men, who live at a mansion in Westchester County in New York. Sending Sabretooth against the X-Men pretty much means that neither man will die. Also, Spider-Man put a spider-tracer on Wolverine, so maybe that would still be functional? (Doubtful) In any case, I have no idea if Spider-Man is just trying to bluff (which doesn’t work so well against single-minded madmen) or honestly doesn’t remember those two things. The Spider-Sense in the final panel is just silly, by the way. Unless tomorrow’s comic is Sabretooth lunging at Spider-Man while our protagonist stares off into the distance. In which case, it’s one of the few times we’ve seen the spider-sense used correctly.
TIL: Despite all that, this whole sequence has been pretty spiffy so far.
Klegg has hair now, which is something I don’t like. I also don’t like how he’s using the term “to coin a phrase”, since I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to mean that you’re introducing a new phrase and the phrase that follows is not new. In fact, in keeping with the research of the previous commentary, I shall research this.
…
All right, as it turns out, it does mean to introduce a new phrase. However, most people use it when they’re saying something cliched and whatnot. So we’re both correct. Oh, and I sincerely doubt Hilda is an excellent shot, because she’s Hilda.
So pirates have taken over the India Voyager II and blown the Phantom’s speedboat (which he took over from pirates) to smithereens? Excellent. Now all that’s left is to watch the Phantom kick some pirate teeth in.
Ah, so Flash and Prince Thun do have a history in the comic strip. I suspected as much. Now we’ll watch them fight for Wartog’s amusement, who is pretty much the worst king ever.
And in the Sunday Phantom, we get silhouetted nudity. At least I’m pretty sure she’s naked behind that curtain, and it’s not like the Phantom hasn’t done things like this before. I do like that the Phantom brought Hero into her room. A horse in a bedroom? Zany!
